What is Seiko's Super-Clear Coating?

Super-Clear Coating is Seiko's own high-performance anti-reflective treatment, reserved for its more advanced models rather than a generic single layer. Instead of one coating on the inside, multiple anti-reflective layers are built up on both surfaces of the sapphire. Each layer is tuned to cancel out reflected light before it reaches your eye, and together they reduce reflections by more than 99%.

The result is the effect Seiko is known for: the crystal seems to almost disappear. There is no bright mirror-like sheen sitting on top of the dial, and very little of the colour shift or "glassy" reflection you see on an untreated or single-coated crystal. What you are left with is a remarkably direct, open view of the dial, as if you could reach in and touch it.

Clarity you can use, every day

In practice this means the dial stays clear and legible exactly where ordinary crystals struggle: in bright sunlight, outdoors, and at sharp viewing angles. It also makes the watch noticeably easier to photograph, because reflections no longer wash out the dial. For a watch you actually wear and read at a glance, this is one of the most meaningful upgrades a crystal can offer.

You get all of this without giving up durability. Sapphire is the hardest watch glass in common use, rated 9 on the Mohs scale and second only to diamond, so it resists scratches and gives a perfectly clear, distortion-free view. Combined with the double-sided Super-Clear Coating, this crystal delivers both the toughness of sapphire and the highest level of legibility Seiko offers.

Care and what to expect

Because the coating is also present on the outer surface, that outer layer is slightly more sensitive to fine surface marks, smudges and gradual wear over years of daily use than uncoated sapphire would be. This is normal for every double AR crystal, regardless of brand, and is not a defect. It is simply the trade-off for the superior, near-invisible clarity. To keep it looking its best for as long as possible, clean the crystal with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid abrasive materials.
