Seiko is one of the world's most iconic and enduring watch brands, with a history spanning more than 140 years. Founded in Tokyo in 1881 by Kintaro Hattori, the company began as a watch and jewellery shop before evolving into one of the most innovative manufacturers in the global watch industry. Today, Seiko is recognised worldwide for combining technical precision with accessible craftsmanship, producing timepieces that range from everyday reliable watches to some of the finest mechanical movements ever made.

Unlike many watch brands that outsource key components, Seiko is one of the few truly vertically integrated manufacturers in the world. The company designs and produces its own movements, cases, dials, hands, crystals and straps entirely in-house, a philosophy known in Japanese as Monozukuri, or the art of making things. This level of self-sufficiency gives Seiko an unusual degree of control over quality and consistency across its entire product range.


A History of Innovation

Seiko's contribution to modern watchmaking is difficult to overstate. In 1969, the brand released the Seiko Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch, fundamentally changing how the world kept time. This was not an isolated achievement. Seiko has consistently been at the forefront of horological development across several decades.

Key milestones in Seiko's history include the introduction of the first Japanese-made wristwatch in 1913, the launch of the world's first quartz watch in 1969, the development of the Spring Drive movement, a unique hybrid of mechanical and electronic timekeeping, and the release of the Seiko Astron GPS Solar in 2012, capable of syncing automatically to atomic time via GPS satellite from anywhere on earth.

This culture of innovation is embedded in Seiko's identity. The brand does not simply follow industry trends, it has repeatedly defined them.

Presage watches are powered by high-quality automatic movements and are finished to a standard that rivals Swiss watches at considerably higher price points. Grand Seiko

Established in 1960 with the explicit goal of creating the finest watch possible, Grand Seiko has developed into one of the most respected names in high horology, competing directly with Swiss manufactures at the top of the market. Grand Seiko watches are produced in limited numbers at dedicated ateliers in Shizukuishi and Shinshu, each one assembled and finished by hand to extraordinarily precise standards. The brand's proprietary Spring Drive movement, which achieves an accuracy of ±1 second per day, is considered one of the most technically sophisticated calibres in production watchmaking.


Seiko Movements and Calibres

One of Seiko's defining strengths is the breadth and depth of its in-house movement programme. The brand produces dozens of calibres spanning quartz, automatic, solar, GPS and Spring Drive technologies. Well-known automatic calibres include the NH35 and NH36, widely used across the Seiko 5 Sports range and highly regarded for their reliability and repairability. The 6R series powers much of the Presage line, offering extended power reserve and improved finishing. At the top of the mechanical range, the 9SA5 Hi-Beat movement represents Seiko's current pinnacle of in-house automatic development.
